The Unconformity

An unconformity is a break in the geological record — a gap where time is missing. Layers that should be there, aren’t. Something happened. We don’t know what.

Queenstown has its own unconformity. The Mt Lyell mine sits on one. Millions of years, gone. The rock above and the rock below don’t match. There is a silence in between them.

NOW Regrowth. Lichen on tailings. Wombat tracks crossing the gravel waste.

~150 YEARS The mining era. Copper smelted, hills stripped, river poisoned beautiful colours.

~40,000 YEARS Palawa / Pakana people. Fire as tool. The oldest ongoing culture on the planet.

THE GAP ~200 million years are missing here. Nobody knows why.

~500 Ma Cambrian volcanics. Copper and iron deposited in fractures. Waiting.

~1,000 Ma Precambrian basement. Quartzite and schist. The floor of an ocean that no longer exists on a continent that has since been rearranged.
